Description:
This trip is currently FULL!  Hope to catch you on the next outing!

Hey Party People!

With the massive amount of snow we've been bombarded with this winter, I can only think about one thing: EPIC WATERFALLS!!! So get ready to dust off your camping gear and join the Sierra Club 20s & 30s for an extended weekend of hiking, eating, socializing, and relaxing as we escape to beautiful Yosemite National Park. Located just 5 hours north of Los Angeles, Yosemite draws in roughly 4 million visitors a year to snap selfies with its jaw-dropping waterfalls and the iconic Half Dome. So come take your own selfies and make all your social media friends completely jelly!!

The cost of this FUNtabulous carcamping adventure is just $129* and includes campsite fees and all meals from Thursday's dinner to Sunday's breakfast. Some volunteer Sierra Club leaders will be thrown in at no additional charge to take you on the on-trail hikes (5-8 miles in length) where you will have some amazing photo ops.

NOT INCLUDED is the National Park entrance fee ($30) and the fee to use the showers.

*NOTE: There is an additional charge of $22 to take the shuttle up to Glacier Point for Saturday's planned hike down the 8-mile Panorama Trail. If you'd rather make it a relaxing Saturday, no additional payment is needed.

*UPDATE: Due to the current snow conditions on the trail, Saturday's planned Panorama Trail hike has been cancelled and will be replaced with an alternate hike.  We apologize for this unfortunate but mandatory change in the itinerary.

All participants will need to bring their own tent (or share one), sleeping bag and pad, and reusable dinnerware (fork, knife, spoon, spork, plate, cup, etc.), and a good attitude.

Parking is limited and participants are encouraged to carpool. Priority will be given to carpools of 3 or more people. (Carpooling is strictly voluntary. The Sierra Club cannot arrange carpools and assumes no liability for any arrangements.)

As always, participants will be expected to help with meal preparation and cleanup (you will work in groups of 3-4) as well as campsite cleanup upon departure. You will also be required to sign a liability waiver to participate on this trip.

This will be an absolutely unforgettable, photo-friendly trip. Prepare to be awed by the majestic waterfalls which will be at their most powerful in several years. They will be nothing short of spectacular! So RSVP and request those days off to join us ASAP before this trip sells out! (Payment info will be sent after you RSVP.)

Any questions, comments, or concerns? Drop us a line through the Contact Leader tab.

-Jason, Al, and Meriven

p.s. You are probably wondering why there are two Yosemite trips posted for the same weekend. Well I'm glad you asked!

Here in the Sierra Club 20s & 30s Section, we try to get as many of you outdoors as possible to show you the beauty of nature and why these special places need to be protected (now more than ever!) Rolf had the incredible idea of offering two pricing options: one that includes food (for those of us who hate to cook, don't know how to cook very much, or just enjoy the social aspect of cooking a meal together with others) and one that doesn't.

Rolf is known for leading his “hot water only” camping trips. I've been before and they're great.  His trips are ridiculously affordable and you get to eat whatever you want (great for those on dietary restrictions!) as long as you bring your own food and cook it yourself, of course.  If I wasn't leading, I would definitely go on Rolf's trip. My meals would be a lot simpler though since I hate making a big mess when I'm just cooking for myself.  We'll be conducting joint hikes so you won't be missing out by choosing one trip over the other.  Choose whichever option works best for you.

To comply with National Park Service regulations, fees charged are only used to cover direct expenses (campsite fees, food, transportation, etc.)  There will be no financial profit from this activity. The Sierra Club leaders are all unpaid volunteers who are excited to show you why these magical places should be protected for future generations to enjoy. If you're not already a member, please consider joining the Sierra Club to show your support and help us protect more of nature's wild places.

Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations made 21 days prior to trip start date will receive a full refund. Cancellations made 7-20 days prior to trip start date will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than 7 days before the trip. All exceptions to this policy shall be reviewed by the trip leader after the completion of the trip.

Description:

--- The trip is full with a wait list.---

---

The waterfalls should be gushing this May, and we’ll be camped at the heart of the Yosemite Valley for a long weekend to enjoy the breathtaking scenery.  Expect cold nights (~ 45°F) and comfortable days (~72°F).

We hope you’ll join us for a “hot water only” camping trip from Thursday, May 18th to Sunday, May 21st.

Why does the trip list two different prices?  The price is the same for Sierra Club members and non-members:  $36 per participant. Saturday's Panorama Trail hike is reached via a one-hour bus to Glacier Point, which costs $22.  Our trip and Jason's trip collectively have 33 tickets on the shuttle.  Those who want to take part in the Panorama Trail hike but come too late to buy shuttle tickets can arrange a car shuttle amongst themselves.

There’s another Yosemite trip the same weekend.  Why the price difference?  Jason Hashimoto is leading a different kind of camping trip: he's hauling up all of the food and cooking gear that his participants are going to need.  Jason's participants will be "volunteering" for one meal prep and one meal clean-up  In contrast, everyone on our trip will bring up their own food and our participants will "volunteer" for about 30-60 minutes for the benefit of our group once during the trip. The two trips are camped adjacent to each other and are conducting some joint hikes.  I (Rolf) have been on several of Jason’s trips and I recommend his trips highly!  Take this link over to learn more about Jason's trip:

http://www.sc2030.org/constructor.php?nav_element=19&url_EventId=3100

Hot water only? Yes:  We’ll provide hot water at breakfast.  We’ll provide hot water and hot charcoal at dinner.  You’ll bring your own food, a small ice chest to keep it cool, and you’ll prepare your own meals.  Please take a look at the sample menu at the end of this write-up.  This is not a foodie trip (unless you plan to bring and cook great food), but the benefit is that the location is beautiful, the trip is affordable, and you’ll be doing only one task for the group.  And if you forget something important, we’re camped near Curry Village, which has a few restaurants and stores.

Campground:  The campground has running water and flush toilets.  Showers are available at Curry Village for a fee ($5?).  Campground location will be emailed to participants.  We have limited parking available at the campground averaging three people per parking spot.  Our spots will be allocated to carpools of 3 or more per vehicle, then, space permitting, 2 or more per vehicle. Overflow parking is available about 1/2 a mile away.

Food:  Bring your own food and beverages for this trip. Please bring a small ice chest with ice to keep your food cool. You may bring a stove to cook dinner or you may decide to make do with the hot water and charcoal provided. Please check out the sample menu at the end of this write-up and you may decide that you don’t need a stove.  Ice chest size is limited by the food storage lockers: Six people sharing one food storage locker means that each person gets a space approximately 17” deep  x 14” wide  x 28” high for their ice chest, other food, and toiletries. It might be worth it to share an ice chest with your carpool.

What’s included in the trip fee?  Campsite, hot water at breakfast and dinner, hot charcoals and aluminum foil so you can grill something at dinner, warm dish water with dish soap, hand soap and a few other hand & dish hygiene materials.

Which hikes are we leading as part of the trip? You’re free to explore the valley on your own and to hike on your own, pending leader approval for your activity (no basejumping, for example).  Trip leaders will lead the following optional hikes:

-> Friday’s hike is to Columbia Rock, halfway up Yosemite Falls (2 miles round trip, 1000 ft vertical gain and loss).  If you're doing well getting to Columbia Rock (not struggling, and in the faster half of our hikers), you may continue on to the top of Yosemite Falls (total of 7.2 miles round trip, 2700’ vertical gain and loss).  We'll have at least two leaders on the hike that ends at Columbia Rock and at least two leaders on the hike continuing to the top of Yosemite Falls.

-> On Saturday, there are two hike options:

1. Hike along the Panorama Trail (8.5 miles total, from Glacier Point (on a plateau above the Yosemite Valley) to the top of Nevada Falls, then descending into the valley to our campground, passing Vernal Falls. The shuttle bus costs $25 for that, so if you’re planning on joining us on this hike, please mail in another check for $25.  We have limited spaces on the bus and when we’re out of spots, we’re out. (You could arrange your own shuttle, driving an hour each way).

2. Hike up the 4-mile trail, then back along the Panorama Trail.  This hike adds 5 miles and 3000 ft vertical gain to the Panorama Trail hike.  Must pre-qualify with Mandy.  Email Rolf and ask how.

Note: All hikes will be along established trails and will be led by at least two Sierra Club leaders.  Hikes may change subject to weather and other conditions.

Itinerary:

Thursday:  The trip officially starts Thursday at 8PM, but you may arrive at camp after 4:30 PM to set up camp.  Enjoy dinner on the road, get food at Curry Village, or cook your own (hot water available until 7:30 PM).  Personally, I’ll probably get a pizza at Curry Village. Pot-luck from 6:30 PM until 7:30 PM. Materials for s’mores provided once the campfire gets going.

Friday and Saturday: Please join us at the hot water campsite to make your own breakfast. Hike with us or explore Yosemite on your own. Your dinner.

Sunday:  Please join us at the hot water campsite to make your own breakfast. We’ll pack up after breakfast and drive home.

We want to enjoy the Yosemite Valley, so we’ll have hot water available for a half hour each morning and for an hour each evening.  We’ll also have 15 minutes of warm water and dish soap for dishes each day after breakfast and after dinner.

If you’re new to camping:  Trip leaders including Mark, Rolf, and Gabe will be happy to help.  Let us know if you want pointers (a list of things to bring, advice setting up your tent) or if you have other concerns. Though it will be cold at night, good sleeping bags and sleeping pads can be rented here in the LA area so that you’ll be comfortably warm.

Alcohol:  If you want to drink alcohol on this trip, bring some. But if you like to drink to excess, please skip this trip.

Concerned about the Hantavirus in Yosemite?  We’re camped less than a mile from the Hantavirus outbreak epicenter that happened in 2012. Please read about Hantavirus on the national park service’s website: http://www.nps.gov/public_health/zed/hanta/hanta_camp.htm

Sample menu

This menu is only a sample.  You may bring/make something completely different:

Dinner #0 (Thursday):  Dinner is on your own.  Curry Village and Yosemite Village both have restaurants. Alternatively, eat on the road if you’re arriving late.

Typical breakfast (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday):  It’s cold in the morning, so why not have instant oatmeal and coffee, using the hot water provided.  Spice it up by mixing some fruit and nuts into your oatmeal.  Alternatively, yogurt with nuts or fruit to go along with a PB&J sandwich. Also make hot coffee or hot chocolate.  Want to warm milk for a child?  Bring a metal cup, put the milk in the metal cup, and bathe the metal cup in hot water.

Typical lunch (Friday and Saturday):  On your own.  If going on an all-day hike, make sure to pack lunch as well as some snacks. Bring adequate amounts of water for the hike.

Typical snack (Friday and Saturday): A banana and a granola bar.  Or an apple, an orange, and some trail mix.

Typical dinner #1 (Friday) and #2 (Saturday):   Hot water, hot charcoals, and aluminum foil will be provided. Bring sausages (pre-cooked?), bell peppers, and onions to grill or steam these by wrapping them in foil and placing that on the grill.  Wrap a potato in foil and cook it in the coals. Bring a bun to complete your dog(s).  Alternatively, make shish-kabobs. Bring brownies for dessert.  We’ll provide marshmallow forks to make s’mores and we’ll bring marshmallows, graham crackers, and chocolate available for s’mores at the campfire, but we might run out by Saturday.

Hey Party People!

Come out and join us this Sunday for a social-paced hike up Echo Mountain.  We'll hike up the Sam Merrill Trail to the White City ruins for a snack break and take in the views of the city (if the smog isn't covering it up) before returning back down.  While at the ruins, feel free to read up on the history of the Mount Lowe Railway or give a quick shout in the Echophone and (maybe) see why it's called Echo Mountain.

This 5.5 mile Roundtrip hike has an elevation gain of about 1,400 feet.  I would say this is a beginner-intermediate hike, a little more challenging than just a beginner hike due to the constant uphill portions.

Bring 2 quarts of liquids (water, sports drink), a snack to share, decent hiking shoes, a hat/cap/visor, sunglasses, sunblock, hiking poles (Optional), and money to grab a bite to eat afterwards (Optional).

As with all Sierra Club hikes, there will be a point and a sweep which the group will need to stay between.  You will also need to sign a Sierra Club liability waiver to participate on this activity.

How do I make a reservation for this trip?  You need to log on to www.sc2030.org.  If you have not registered for this website before, you will need to register for the website before signing up for this trip.  Once you have registered, to make your reservation first click on the Calendar tab, then click on multi-day trips and select the Catalina Trip. Scroll down the page until you see the "Make Reservation" icon; click on that to make your reservation.  Once you do this, you will then get an email that you are awaiting approval – we will approve you shortly. Once approved then you can make your payment. Please note that you cannot make a payment until you have been approved.

To pay by Paypal (after approval): log on to our website, go to the My Membership tab on the top of the page and select Event participation. How do I sign up for the boat?  You must make full payment before you will be able to sign up for a boat. Once you have made payment, you will receive an email with a link. Simply click on the link to sign up for your boat. Please note that there are two departure times on Saturday and two return times on Monday, both of which are listed on the boat sign-up page.  If you don’t click on the link in the email, the next time you log into sc2030.org you will be directed to the boat sign-up page.  You can also use this link: http://www.sc2030.org/my_membership/reserve_boat.php?url_event=OD0EI1LST2

Can I switch boats once I have signed up? Yes, but once a boat is full you will have to sign up for the other boat by just going back to the link above. There will also be an opportunity to switch boats for the return trip home. We will post a sign-up board and waiting list to switch boats outside the mess hall.

Where do I catch my boat? Details about where to check-in and boat loading will be provided in the trip information package; in general, the boat departure is very close to the Long Beach Aquarium.

Do I have to carry my luggage a long way?  No. Just a little way.  You can drop off your luggage at the check-in location prior to parking your car.

I get seasick, what should I do?  You might want to bring seasickness pill with you. We suggest using the non-drowsy type so that once we get to the island you can partake in all the fun activities without being sleepy.

How much does parking cost for the weekend?  Our boat vender has indicated Parking at the Pike parking lot with validation with cost $40.  Although most years - they actually charge less (strange). If you don’t want to pay the full price, consider finding someone to carpool with.

How do I arrange for a Carpool?  The Sierra Club does not arrange for carpools and is not responsible or liable for those arrangements.  However, you can use meet up messaging or other social media to arrange for carpools. There is a carpool tab in the trip information page.  You can enter your information and people can email you directly. Additionally, you can also use the comments section of the Catalina Island’s meet up page to arrange for carpool.

 Accommodations and food:

Is this camping? No, we are staying in a summer camp – you will not need a tent for this trip. You will be staying in either a cabin or a platform tent.

What is the difference between a Cabin and a Platform Tent?  Platform tents have a wood base, green canvas sides, and two cots with a mattress each inside (think the TV show Mash). The platform tents typically hold 2 persons, but you can have one to yourself if you choose to. Rustic wood cabins w/electric lights/outlets with bunk beds sleeps up to 8 persons. Cabins are same sex.  There is one central restroom with private shower stalls for each set cabins.  Arrangements can be made to share a cabin with groups of friends. If you don’t have a roommate in mind, no worries!  We will randomly assign you to a cabin.  We have male only and female only cabins. We do not have coed cabins. The cabins are located in the front area of the camp, while the tent cabins are in the rear.

Both cabin and platform tents have one mattress per bed. However, you will need to bring your own sheet(s), pillow, and sleeping bag.  If privacy is an issue for you and you do not want share a cabin or a tent, you have the option to stay in a platform tent by yourself.

Does the camp have showers? Yes, there are free hot showers at camp. But you must bring your own soap and shampoo.

Can I upgrade to a cabin after I have signed up? Yes, the cost is $20.  You can go directly to Paypal.com or send us a check to the address on the Trip Description. For Paypal:  Log on to Paypal.com and enter in the following address: sc2030acct@gmail.com and pay the $20. Or send a check for $20. Refunds for switching from a cabin to a tent after payment is made are not available.

Do I have to make advanced arrangements for a roommate? No. We will make the arrangements when we arrive. If you have 6 or more people in your group of friends, you can get your own cabin. Otherwise, you will likely have to share.  You don’t need to tell us in advance who you are rooming with as we handle this when we get to the island. Our leaders will handle cabin check-in once we get to camp.

How do I get a roommate? If you are staying in a cabin, you can let us know if you have some friends you would like to share with-otherwise we will assign you to a cabin.  If you are in a tent, you can stay in your own tent or pick a roommate.

Should I come on the trip if I am not coming with a group of friends?  Yes, you will meet lots of people quickly so please join in.

LIMITED SEATS REMAINING!!!

Hey Party People!

Who's got an itch to go on another Epic Adventure?!?!?  Well wait no mo...err...okay so technically I guess you'll have to wait until September.  I've put together another FUNtastic 5-day/4-night, I-need-to-get-out-of-Dodge outdoor experience you won't want to miss. This extended Labor Day Weekend (September 2-6, 2017), the Sierra Club 20s & 30s Section brings you...

The EPIC SOUTHWEST ADVENTURE! (Because one state just wasn't epic enough!)

Our featured destination: Monument Valley!  A popular location on the Utah/Arizona border where many westerns were shot, Monument Valley is known for its towering sandstone buttes and mesas that rise majestically from the desert floor.  We'll also visit Natural Bridges National Monument, home of the second largest natural bridge in the world!  Rounding out the itinerary are stops at Horseshoe Bend (just google it!), Four Corners Monument (because where else can you be in four states at once?), and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon (which is just as stunning as its southern, more accessible counterpart but without the crowds.)   The best part is you don't have to drive for 10 hours to get there!   We're hopping on a chartered bus so you can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride!

Sierra Club Member Price for the Epic Southwest Adventure: $440.

Trip includes: Roundtrip transportation by charter bus out of LA, 2 nights lodging* (double occupancy), 2 nights camping, all park entrance fees, some meals, bus snacks and movies, driver gratuity, and a ton of photo ops!!  Tossed in at no additional charge are some Sierra Club Outings Leaders to make sure you have a rootin' tootin' good time!  All guided hikes will be between 4-6 miles, on-trail, and led/swept by said Sierra Club Outings Leaders.  Note: Some of the hikes are on sandy trails so it'll seem a lot longer than it is.

All participants will need to bring their own tent (or share one), sleeping bag and sleeping pad, reusable dinnerware, and a good attitude! Participants will be expected to help with loading & unloading of gear, campsite setup & clean up, and meal preparation & clean up. You will be randomly assigned to a small group of 4-5 participants for each duty.

Any questions, comments, or concerns? Just hit that Contact Leader tab.

* Due to the long distance and the bus driver's maximum allotted driving hours per day, we cannot drive straight to the campsite.  On the way there, we'll be stopping overnight in St George, UT and on the way back, we'll be stopping overnight in LAS VEGAS, BAYBEE!!!

To comply with National Park Service regulations, fees charged are only used to cover direct expenses (campsite fees, food, transportation, etc.) There will be no financial profit from this activity.

Cancellation Policy:
Cancellations made 21 days prior to trip start date will receive full refund. Cancellations made 7-20 days prior to trip start date will receive a 50% refund. No refunds will be given for cancellations made less than 7 days before the trip. All exceptions to this policy shall be reviewed by the trip leader after the completion of the trip.
