Explore one of America’s Newest National Parks

with the 20s & 30s Section of the Angeles Chapter Sierra Club! 
 

Join us as we hike and camp at Pinnacles National Park!

 

Campground:  Pinnacles Campground is accessed only from the east side of the Park as there are no connecting roads between the two entrances of Pinnacles. Each campsite has picnic tables, a fire ring, and nearby water spigots. Oak trees provide shade many campsites. Coin-operated showers and a dump station are available. There is also a swimming pool in the campground that is typically open from middle of April through the end of September, depending on the weather trend. Lastly, there is a nearby camp store, open daily from 9:30 am until 4:30 pm. We have limited parking available at the campground, averaging three people per parking spot. Parking spots will be allocated to carpools of three or more per vehicle, then, space permitting two or more per vehicle. Overflow parking is available.  

 

Food: Many meals and beverages are provided on this trip! Breakfast burritos, juice, coffee, trail lunch featuring deli meat sandwiches, potluck dinner featuring spaghetti and meatballs, salads, s’mores, and a grab and go breakfast will all be provided to participants! 

 

What’s Included:The trip fee will cover the campsites, food (as mentioned above), warm dish water with dish soap, and a few other basic amenities. 

 

Group Chores:We ask that each participant help out around camp and mealtimes. Tasks will include helping to prepare the meals, helping to clean dishes, and taking trash from our campsite to the dump area. Each participant will be able to sign up for their preferred task(s).  

 

Itinerary:
Friday: 
Arrive any time after 1:00pm on Friday, June 7thand any time before 9:00am on Saturday, June 8th. After arriving at camp, you can set up camp, explore the campground, stop at the Visitor Center, prepare your own dinner, and gather around for a campfire once it gets dark. Materials for s’mores will be provided once the campfire gets going. 

 

Saturday: We’ll have a 7:30am wake up followed by breakfast burritos, coffee, and juice. We will also prepare our trail lunches (sandwiches and fruit), before heading out on our hike at 9:00am.

We’ll carpool to the Bear Gulch Day Use Area where we will start our 5.5-mile hike. We will be hiking the High Peaks Trail to Condor Gulch through the heart of the Pinnacles rock formations. We will then take the High Peaks Trail for about 2 miles, complete the “Steep and Narrow Section”, and continue towards Tunnel Trail (0.7 miles). We’ll then join with the High Peaks Trail for about 0.6 miles before returning on the Condor Gulch Trail for about 2.0 miles and reuniting with our vehicles. If we’re lucky, we will see some California Condor flying overhead! 

After our moderately strenuous hike, we will return to camp and freshen up. Our pot luck dinner featuring spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread, salad, and more(!) will be served around 5:00pm. We’ll enjoy another campfire and s’mores complete with lots of laughs. Please Bring Your Own Beverages (BYOB). 

 

Sunday: We’ll have an 8:00am wake up and a more “grab and go” type breakfast will be provided (bagels, muffins, coffee, juice, fruit). Participants will pack up camp and can either head back to home or stay for an optional hike to the Bear Gulch Reservoir (approximately 2.5 miles roundtrip). Bring your cameras!

We'll cancel the trip if the forecast calls for steady, substantial rain. If you decide to cancel, you'll get a full refund if you cancel 30 days prior to the start date, or 50% refund if you cancel more than 15 days before the start date. Description:
Do you need a break in your workweek? Does the thought of hiking along the beach and surrounding hills brighten your spirits? Then join us for the Playa Del Rey conditioning walk. Afterwards we will stop by a local watering hole for refreshments (MO’s or The Shack). The walk is 5 miles, 200 ft gain. Directions to meeting point: Go W on Culver Blvd, to Nicholson, turn Left (Note: Nicholson turns into Pershing) and continue on Pershing to Waterview (1/2 mi), turn R to top-of-the-hill, (corner of Rindge and Waterview). Where the NW corner fence of LAX meets the homes overlooking the ocean. You an also get there from Manchester as well. Easy access to the starting point is also possible from Manchester Ave. and Vista Del Mar. The fun starts at 7:00pm. Rain Cancels. No dogs, please.

How to get There: From Pacific Coast Highway, Turn east onto Sunset Blvd. and left onto Los Liones Drive after 0.3 miles. The Trailhead is clearly marked about 0.6 miles down Los Liones Drive, just before it makes a short turn to the west. We will meet under the main gate that says "Los Leones Canyon".
 
Description:

Join us on a 7 mile hike in The Santa Monica Mountains. The first part of The hike-The Los Liones Trail-is one of the most lush Canyons in The Santa Monica Mountains. Afterward, The Trail meets up with a Fireroad that we will take all the way to The Parker Mesa Overlook(1525ft). This Overlook provides us with an amazing, Panoramic View of The Los Angeles Basin from downtown up to Palos Verdes. We will take a lunch break at The Overlook before hiking back the way we came.

Meeting Place is at The Los Liones Trailhead in Pacific Palisades, by the main "Los Leones Canyon Gate" at 8a.m. There is free Parking all along the road. Do not park in The Church Parking Lot.

We will be meeting in the lower parking lot at the trailhead. If the parking lot is full there is an overflow lot on the upper part by the Angeles Crest Hwy. Arrive early!
 
Description:

A pleasant and easy hike to a 50 ft waterfall via a 4.5 mile hike on the Gabrielino Trail. This is an upside down hike. We will need to climb back up 650ft to get back to the trailhead. We first follow a babbling creek down into a wooded canyon with a few crossings of the Arroyo Seco. After a few miles, the trail leaves the creek to climb back up the side of the canyon offering amazing views of the San Gabriel Mountains from this remote canyon. We will also have the opportunity to see the remnants of Camp Switzer, a very popular hikers camp from the previous century.

To get to Switzer Picnic area, come up the Angeles Crest Hwy 2 from La Cañada. It's about 10 miles to that area. Turn into the parking lot on your right hand side and drive all the way down to the lower lot.  

You need an Adventure Pass or Interagency Pass, America the Beautiful to park.

Bring snacks/lunch, at least 2L of water, lug soles, your 10 essentials and your sense of adventure!

Description:

Looking to get outdoors for a quick weekend backpack? This easy/moderate backpack starts Saturday morning at Islip Saddle. We will hike 2+ miles and 1,000 ft. elevation gain on the famous PCT to Little Jimmy Campground. Once there we will setup camp and have lunch. There will be an optional afternoon hike to Mt. Islip, 2.4 miles RT with 700 ft. elevation gain. There will be time to enjoy beautiful views from the top of Mt. Islip as well as explore the remains of an old fire lookout. We will return to camp for happy hour and dinner. All participants are responsible for their own food and water. Sunday morning we will pack up and leave camp.

Little Jimmy campground has pit toilets as well as bear lockers. There is a fresh water spring about a 1/8th of a mile from camp, filtering water is recommended and encouraged.

A fantastic 3-day Island vacation awaits you twenty-six miles across the ocean at Camp Emerald Bay. Camp Emerald Bay, a Boy Scout camp, is located on the rustic west end of Catalina Island, has secluded beaches, coves, and enjoys unparalleled access to the natural gems of Catalina's fantastic coastline.

This trip has been occurring annually for about 20 years and is typically attended by over 300 with participants ranging in age from the late 20s to 60s.  You must be over 21 to participate.  We set-up many activities to help people make new friends.  Many of our participants are first-timers who often come on their own but leave with many new friends. If you like to mix endless fun activities and friendly people along with a beautiful coastline, then look no further!

This camp is fully loaded (no roughing it on this trip) with great activities --no tents are required.  The talented camp staff will prepare our meals.  Most people each under an outside covered patio with a bay view. The hiking trails from camp offer the perfect opportunity to spot the Catalina Island Fox or even an occasional wandering Bison. And the ocean is steps away!!

Activities: Your weekend boasts a full schedule of both day and nighttime organized activities. Daytime fun includes: leader led hikes, snorkeling, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, volleyball, sunbathing, fun competitions, and plenty more. Nighttime activities include happy hour, karaoke, mixers, dance lessons with expert teachers, dancing to hip tunes played by an fantastic DJ, games, campfire hosted by a musician and lots of guitars, or merely relaxing and stargazing. Note: Hikes will be on established trails and have a round trip distance of 2 to 7 miles with elevation gains of up to 1,200 feet.

Boat Transportation: We will be using boats that depart from and return to Long Beach. The boats will depart on Saturday morning (August 31) and return Monday (September 2) late morning and afternoon.

Boat Schedule:  There are two boat schedule options.  Both depart early Saturday morning. Monday returns are either in the morning or the afternoon.

Note: Boat times are subject to change.  Boat selection is made on a first come first serve.  The Long Beach boat departs and arrives near the aquarium.

 

Accommodations: 

Option 1) Pre-assembled one or two-person platform army style tents (wood floor, canvas walls/roof, 2 cots with mattress. No setup required. Couples can push together two cots in the platform tents to make a single larger bed.  For an image, think of the old TV show Mash. Requires sleeping bag and pillow. Bathrooms and Showers: Emerald Bay has flush toilets and hot showers.  There will be separate units for men and women. You will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow.

Option 2) Rustic wood cabins w/electric lights/outlets with bunk beds sleep up to 8 persons. Cabins are unisex unless special arrangements are in advance.   Restrooms/showers are nearby.  Arrangements can be made to share a cabin with groups of friends. If you don’t have a roommate in mind, no worries! You will quickly meet people on the boat ride over or we will assign you to a cabin. You will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow. The camp has flush toilets and hot showers.  There will be separate units for men and women.

Option 3) Upgraded rooms: We have a limited amount of private rooms; each has 3 beds -deluxe bunk bed (single top and bottom bunk).  We recommend two per room. There is a shared connected bathroom for every two private rooms with a nice shower with plenty of hot water.   It is perfect for 4 or 5 friends to share connected rooms. The cost of a room is an extra $225 above the cabin price.  These rooms are available on a first serve basis.  Even though each of the rooms has three beds, we are renting by the room so you will have to know someone else that wants to share as we are not making those arrangements. Supply is very limited and rooms will go fast. You will need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow.

Food: Meals are prepared daily by experienced camp staff and served buffet style in a large dining hall. Breakfast typically includes eggs, pancakes, cereal, fruit, and much more- and great coffee! Lunches are simple, usually either a sandwich bar or hot food. Dinners may include chicken, fish, beef, and veggie options; and of course, we always have dessert. You will not be disappointed.  Vegetarian, Glutton-free, Vegan can be accommodated – just let us know before the trip. No one has ever gone hungry on this trip

This trip is a fundraiser; net proceeds will go to the Sierra Club Inspiring Connections Outdoors (formerly Inner City Outings), Angeles Chapter and 20s & 30s Section.  For the last several years, proceeds from this trip have sponsored a kids’ camp at Camp Emerald Bay for about 75 deserving kids.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Reservations and Payment:

 How do I make a reservation for this trip?  You need to log on to www.sc2030.org.  If you have not registered for this website before, you will need to register for the site before signing up for this trip.  Once you have signed up, to make your reservation first click on the Calendar tab, then click on multi-day trips and select the Catalina Trip. Scroll down the page until you see the "Make Reservation" icon; click on that to make your reservation.  Once you do this, you will then get an email that you are awaiting approval – we will approve you shortly. Once approved then you can make your payment. Please note that you cannot make a payment until you have been approved.  Note:  Please be patient with our website as it is a bit old and tired - and we know it needs updating.  Also, be patient with all of us volunteers because we all have other jobs and may not always be able to answer your questions at the moment.

How do I join the Sierra Club? Do I get a discount for the trip if I join? To join the Sierra Club go to sc2030.org, click on the tab at the very bottom of the main page titled Join Sierra Club Now!!!  Right now there is a special $15 membership offer with which you get a free daypack.  For first-time new member applicants, a one-year Sierra Club membership can be purchased for $15 prior to the trip allowing you to benefit from the Member price and a free gift.  

 Do I need to be a member of the Sierra Club to attend this trip?  No. Everyone is very welcome.

Can I pay at the discounted rate for a family member or friend if I am a member and they are not? No, each person must be a member to receive the discount.

Can I sign up my friend or family under my reservation (+1)? No. Each person must sign up individually. This is the only way we can keep track of everyone. Both the boat company and the camp need a list of everyone in attendance.

When does the early bird discount end? The early bird price ends on July 10.

 What is the cancellation policy? You may cancel 45 or more days prior to start date and receive a full refund. Cancellation 15-45 days prior to trip start date, you will receive 50% refund. 0-14 days or missed boat, no refund will be given. All exceptions to this policy shall be reviewed by Trip Organizer/Leader Ron Domash after the completion of the trip.

How do I cancel my reservation? Log on to sc2030.org, go to My Membership tab, then click on the Event Participation tab, and select the Reservation Status tab. At this point click on Delete Reservation to change your reservation status. 

How do I sign up for the boat?  You must make full payment before you will be able to sign up for a boat. Once you have made payment, you will receive an email with a link. Simply click on the link to sign up for your boat. Also, after your payment is made and logged, the next time you log into the site - you will be prompted to the boat sign up page. Can I switch boats once I have signed up? Yes, but once a boat is full you will have to sign up for the other boat by just going back to the link above.

Can I switch boats for the way back once I get to camp? There will also be an opportunity to switch boats for the return trip home. We will post a sign-up board and waiting list to switch boats outside the mess hall.

Where do I catch my boat? Details about where to check-in and boat loading will be provided in the trip information package; in general, the boat departure is very close to the Long Beach Aquarium.

Do I have to carry my luggage a long way at camp?  No. Just a little ways.  Also, you will want to drop off your luggage at the check-in location prior to parking your car.

I get seasick, what should I do?  You might want to bring seasickness pill with you. We suggest using the non-drowsy type so that once we get to the island you can partake in all the fun activities without being sleepy.

How much does parking cost for the weekend?  Our boat vendor has indicated Parking at the Pike parking lot with validation is estimated at $24.  If you don’t want to pay the full price, consider finding someone to carpool with.

How do I arrange for a Carpool?  The Sierra Club does not arrange for carpools and is not responsible or liable for those arrangements.  However, you can use meet up messaging or other social media to arrange for carpools. There is a carpool tab on the trip information page.  You can enter your information and people can email you directly. Additionally, you can also use the comments section of the Catalina Island’s meet up and Facebook page to arrange for carpool. 

 Accommodations and food:

Is this camping? No, we are staying at a summer camp – you will not need a tent for this trip. You will be staying in either a cabin or a platform tent.

What is the difference between a Cabin and a Platform Tent?  Platform tents have a wooden base, green canvas sides, and two cots with a mattress on each inside (think the TV show Mash). The platform tents typically hold 2 persons, but you can have one to yourself if you choose to. Rustic wood cabins w/electric lights/outlets with bunk beds sleep up to 8 persons. Cabins are the same sex.  There is one central restroom with private shower stalls for each set of cabins.  Arrangements can be made to share a cabin with groups of friends. If you don’t have a roommate in mind, no worries!  We will randomly assign you to a cabin.  We have male only and female only cabins. We do not have coed cabins. The cabins are located in the front area of the camp, while the tents are in the rear. 

Both cabin and platform tents have mattresses for each bed or cot. However, you will need to bring your own sheet(s), pillow, and sleeping bag.  If privacy is an issue for you and you do not want to share a cabin or a tent, you have the option of staying in a platform tent by yourself.

Does the camp have showers? Yes, there are free hot showers at camp. But you must bring your own soap and shampoo.

Can I upgrade to a cabin after I have signed up? Yes, the cost is $20.  You can go directly to Paypal.com or send us a check to the address on the Trip Description. For Paypal:  Log on to Paypal.com and enter in the following address: sc2030acct@gmail.com and pay the $20. Or send a check for $20. Refunds for switching from a cabin to a tent after payment is made are not available.

Do I have to make advanced arrangements for a roommate? No.  If you have 6 or more people in your group of friends, you can get your own cabin. Otherwise, you will likely have to share.  You don’t need to tell us in advance who you are rooming with as we handle this when we get to the island. Our leaders will handle cabin check-in once we get to camp.

How do I get a roommate? If you are staying in a cabin, you can let us know if you have some friends you would like to share with, otherwise, we will assign you to a cabin.  If you are in a tent, you can stay in your own tent or pick a roommate.

Should I come on the trip if I am not coming with a group of friends? Yes, you will meet lots of people quickly, so please join in.  We also have lots of social activities to meet other people. 

 
Cancellation Policy:
You may cancel 45 or more days prior to start date and receive a full refund. Cancellation 15-45 days prior to trip start date, you will receive 50% refund. 0-14 days or missed boat, no refund will be given. All exceptions to this policy shall be reviewed by Trip Organizer/Leader Ron Domash after the completion of the trip.

Description:

Join us for a day on East Anacapa Island!  We'll explore the small island and enjoy the expansive views!  We'll hike all of the 2 miles of trails the island offers and we'll check out the visitor center.  Bring your camera!


Itinerary:


8:45 AM - Arrive at the Island Packers dock at Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard.


9:30 AM - The boat departs.  The captain typically looks for marine life on the way to the island and sometimes discusses environmental issues.


10:30 AM - Arrival at the "Landing Cove" on East Anacapa Island.  Climbing a short vertical ladder brings us to the dock.   A 160-step stair tower leads from the dock to the plateau of the island.  

mid-day - We'll check out the visitor center, take part in any docent-led hikes, and definitely walk the full network of trails (2 miles total), stopping along the way to enjoy the views in all directions.   We'll have lunch at the picnic tables near the visitor center.

3:45 PM - The boat departs from the "Landing Cove."

A few notes:

1. There is no food or drink or even water available on the island, so we'll need to be self-sufficient.

2. The island has pit toilets but no flush toilets.

3. We're required to stay on the trails while on Anacapa Island.

4. This outing is co-sponsored by the "Little Hikers Committee."  If you're bringing children,  please let me know. And consider reserving their boat tickets through islandpackers.com because child tickets are cheaper than the adult tickets we purchased for this outing.

 
Cancellation Policy:
If you cancel 2 weeks before the trip, you'll get a full refund. We'll cancel if the boat cancels and in that case you'll get a full refund. The boat checks the weather and decides at 5:30 AM each morning whether to sail or not.

 Death Valley camping in September! Are we Crazy? NO! Join us on camping adventure as we camp at an elevation of 4000 ft in the mountains above Death Valley National Park on Friday evening (the days are warm and nights cool!). Trailhead in the 60's. Saturday, we'll hike to the top of Telescope Peak-the highest peak in the Park, at 11000 ft, with spectacular views in all directions. You will see Badwater in Death Valley on one side and the Panamint Valley on the other... The lowest (-282 ft below sea level Badwater Basin) and tallest (Mt. Whitney 14,505 ft) locations in the continental US can be seen from the top of Telescope peak.  We also visit the Charcoal Kilns. The hike itself is a 14 mile round trip with 3000 ft elevation gain. The hike is considered strenous due to the gain and distance. The weather, while always unpredictable, should be in the 60's and 70's. Dress in layers, bring 10 essentials for the hike and camping gear.  Sunday optional peaks are available. Trip includes happy hour snacks, a Saturday night dinner & breakfast Sunday. BYOB.
